This training is based on both a virtual first-year advising presentation and a networking session for new advisors presented at the NACADA 2021 Region 4 & 7 Conference. The course will center on five key components of effective academic advising in the first year. Participants will learn about strategies for positive communication in advising, building trust and rapport with students, ten tips for new advisor success from seasoned advising professionals, and professional growth and development in the first year of academic advising. NACADA Core Values and Competencies, Personal Advising Philosophies, Universal Design, Cultural Competency, Diversity and Inclusion, Advising Scope, Setting Realistic Expectations, Micro messaging and Positive Role Modeling will be discussed. Recommendations for professional development, a team approach to academic advising, campus partnerships and resources, and advisor well-being will also be addressed in this program. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own practices, ask questions about advising, and share ideas with fellow colleagues in breakout discussions.
